Yes, you heard it from us. We are safe and sound. No Typhoons have
ensnared the Lee's. As if it could! We are a blending of two very
feisty families who look at death in the face and like the Smothers Brothers, spit on it. The weeks that our blog has gone
un-updated have been filled with many an adventure however. Some of which I will share with you now.
We finished up our stint of baby sitting on Saturday May 3. A day that proved tragic for people in Burma. I didn't actually hear about the Typhoon until several days after the fact when my sister Jaime dropped me the following message on
myspace. "Right. I know you're busy playing with kids and teaching English and hopefully not getting DEAD in massive TYPHOONS, but honestly...updating your blog every once in awhile would not be THAT hard. Seriously. I've practically forgotten I have a sister. -sticks out tongue- Do something about this."
"Dead? Typhoons?" I thought. "I better update the blog... "
So here it is.
Again, the question is where have we been? Well, let me just tell you. The week before the
Institute ended Michael and I were getting antsy. We wanted to go on a quick vacation before school started but nothing was looking to promising until I mentioned
Krabi. It's a place some of our fellow student missionaries down in Bangkok had told us about and said was fairly fantastic. So we checked it out and by the end of that day we had our Bus tickets in hand and our hotel reservations confirmed.
It was quite the adventure. We utilized nearly every mode of motorized
transportation possible. Bus, Taxi, Train, Van, Minibus, Truck, Boat, and Car.
We set out early Monday morning on a 9 hour bus ride to Bangkok, From there we took a very hot and loud 12 hour train ride to
Surrattani. From
Surrattani a 3 hour bus ride to
Krabi town, and then a 20 minute over-stuffed van ride to
Ao Nang beach and our hotel. Needless to say, we were glad to get to our hotel and relax. (Even if they didn't have warm water upon arrival)
During our four days there, we went Kayaking
thru a mangrove forest, with "friendly monkeys" who jumped on your boat as you paddled past. ( Friendly or no, I was ready to clobber it with my oar if it tried anything. I saw Congo. I know how they think.) We went on an Island Hopping tour that took us snorkeling, swimming and showed us the lagoons and beaches that they used in the shooting of "The Beach."
Oooooo. So impressive right? -grins- That of course was the day that I forgot to put sunscreen on my face and got a
ridiculous sunburn that stayed with my for the rest of the trip.
Our last day there we spent our morning
rock climbing by the sea. We met a really cool guy from Sweden named Jimmy Olson. Yes, like the Jimmy from the Superman series. He was fun to climb with and chat up. Oh! And here is how small the world is. As we were climbing we ran into a friend of ours! Chris! We had been chatting with him awhile ago and he had said that he was coming to Thailand but we were not sure when or where. So imagine our surprise when we met up on our vacation to
Krabi while climbing! I felt kind of stupid because when I saw him I couldn't believe that it was him. So I stared. Unashamedly. I would have been so
embarrassed if it had been a complete stranger because I was staring at him as if he had grown a third nostril or something. Bless him, he got up with a smile on his face and came over to where I stood with my mouth no doubt agape. We laughed, exchanged hugs all around and started talking about where he had been, what he had been doing and the like. It was a very happy meeting.
Our trip back was just as adventure filled as the way down. Long cramped minivan ride, riding
Thai style in the back of a truck, public transport,
frigid train ride, and an incredibly long bus ride back up to
Chiang Mai. But here we are. Safe and sound. Hopefully by tomorrow we will have our class lists in hand so we know what to plan for when school starts next Wednesday.
Life is good for us. Much love to all.
